I
invited Mike Tyler to the house I share with my
wife, Sallee, following his excellent organization
of two of my
Understanding of Music Seminars last year.
Mike was here in his capacity as a contractor, and
brought Jerry West with him to carry out the work
on our house. The fact that our house is a beach
house 15 miles north of Boston and that Mike and
Jerry drove all the way from Michigan was
presented as absolutely no problem (which should
have been the motto placed in bold writing on the
side of Mike's truck).
The original
contract was for the installation of a new door
and window with the replacement of the trim boards
around the house. However, the speed at
which these actions were carried out immediately
encouraged my wife and myself to ask,
do you think you could
also.....................(fill in the blank)?
Some of the
extras
which were taken in stride and done with great
care and enthusiasm included: repairing four
pilings beneath our beach house, installing new
railings on two decks, building a fence, finding
and persuading a window manufacturer to make in
less than one week a custom-designed garden window
for the kitchen (installed in one afternoon),
replacing rotted boards on the back deck and
painting the outside of the house from top to
bottom.
Every action
was done at speed, with care and efficiency, and
Mike and Jerry worked sometimes 11 hour days (and
I mean worked) to make their self-imposed daily
targets. My wife and I are so impressed with
the quality of the product we received that we are
inviting both Mike and Jerry back next year to
carry out the extension to our house, new
bathroom, sun-room and upper deck as well as
building a new roof.
Watching Mike
pack his truck with every tool, ladder and even
building rubbish so as to leave a clean space was
just as amazing, sixteen truckloads in the space
of one truck (and all of it secure and seemingly
simple to arrange).
Mike and
Jerry pushed the physical universe around like a
toy car and I swear the house is still in shock
and thinking to itself
errrrr........what
just happened?
Mike and Jerry happened!, and delivered a product
that was way and above what was requested.

getting the workshop

I really love the way you make
no problem
your answer to any request. Maybe it should
be your motto!
I totally
love the creative ideas contributed by both you
and Jerry. The sense of teamwork between you
guys and us the homeowner was very refreshing.
Like auto
repair, home repair can be a very humbling
experience as the "experts" ensure you know their
knowledge is way beyond you. My questions
were important and answered fully, never with an
attitude like I've experienced with other
contractors (very patronizing, like I don't have a
clue). With Mike it really was different.
With Mike my understanding was important and my
opinion was too. Jerry his teammate was
equally incredible with great energy and
contribution every step of the way.
My
house looks great! My door is the talk of
the neighborhood and I have you guys to thank.
Even our neighbor agreed that the high deck "wind
screens" were a good idea! I wish you guys
lived closer but now that I've been spoiled, how
can I hire anyone else? We love what you
have contributed to make our home more ideal.

Mike
did an excellent job making a walk-in closet, and
texture-painting our master bedroom. He
takes his time to make sure it is done right.
Mike pays attention to the details and what I
